Bethel Burying Ground Competition: “A Symbolic Up and Away”

 

Taking place between 2019-2021, the Bethel Burying ground competition was a contest to design a memorial for a Philadelphia playground under which was discovered an ancient African American gravesite which had existed from the early 1800’s.  Muhsana Ali was one of the five finalists selected to design the burying ground memorial to honor the ancestors underfoot. While Muhsana’s work was not selected, she received high rating from the community who participated in the vote and honorable mention from the selection committee.

Muhsana produced a powerful design, created in collaboration with two architects, a landscape architect, an archeologist and an assistant from the school of architecture at Morgan State University.  The work required the production of a PDF document, project presentation, a 3D model design and a video presentation.
